The revamping of Toronto Pearson International Airport’s runway was completed late on Tuesday (May 16) after nearly two months of upgrades, disrupting hundreds of flights.

The $30m (R394m) reconstruction of the longest and busiest of Pearson’s five runways began on March 28. Crews worked around the clock to lay down a new surface, among other work, on east-west Runway 05-23.

The construction resulted in a temporary 35% reduction in capacity. Normally between 1 200 and 1 300 flights arrive or depart Pearson every day.
